Copyright

Further details about the status of a specific book including any restrictions on its text/images can be found by following the links back to the original scanned book. I have retained the original copyright notices in the translations, although all source books have now fallen into the public domain in both their country of origin and the UK as far as I am aware (other countries maybe different).

The translations on this site fall roughly into two categories: purely machine translated and human improved. Please check the footer at the very bottom of a book’s page as this will distinguish the two categories.

When a book is in the public domain a translator may claim copyright ownership for their translated work. For those translations that I am (slowly!) working to improve I have added this site’s copyright notice to the page’s footer. They should be considered a work in progress. The plan is to release these books under a creative commons licence when I am happy with the translation.

Whether copyright can be extended to purely machine translated books seems a grey area. Usually to qualify for copyright a work has to be produced by a human and has to involve some original creative work. While there is a bit of work tidying up the optical character recognition output, the translation is a mere press of a button. I personally don’t think this is enough to claim the copyright on a whole book. As far as I’m concerned the machine translated text remains in the public domain. All I ask is if you quote bits of these books or re-host them in their entirety, could you please provide a link back to this site?

On a similar theme, please feel free to non-commercially reuse this site’s images (subject to any restrictions on the original scans), but again, it would be polite to provide a link back to this site. Theoretically some images may still have an active copyright as diagrams were often shared by several books/authors. If I have unknowingly infringed your copyright then please get in touch and I will obviously remove the image.

Disclaimer

The translations on this site have been generated using a number of automated processes, and each of these can introduce errors. For example, the optical character recognition often struggles with numbers. I highly recommend you check any measurements against the values in the original scans.

No automated translation is perfect. Some content/text may not be accurately translated due to the limitations of the translation software. Some words may have changed their meaning over time.

I am not a professional translator, I don’t speak Polish and my franglais is tres rusty. No warranty of any kind, either expressed or implied, is made as to the accuracy, reliability, or correctness of any translations.
